Recounting My First Job in Queens as a Concrete Contractor
Last week, I got a promotion at work. I was to be transferred from Manhattan to our new office on the eastern side of New York – in Queens. My job had taken me all around New York City, albeit on a temporary basis, but this was the first time I had to move permanently in my career of 15 years.
I work as a concrete contractor for a reputed masonry firm. As a concrete contractor in New York, I have come across jobs of various degrees of difficulty during my time with the firm, but none was as complicated as the one I am about to narrate-
My first job in Queens came from an old couple in Ridgewood. When I arrived at the site, their house seemed quite normal from outside. It was old, but well-maintained.
The old couple took me to their basement and showed me what was wrong. The walls on which the house stood were crumbling away and looked like they’d give away any moment. They told me that they showed this to many concrete contractors from all over New York, but they refused to work on it lest the whole house came crashing down.
The challenge was to repair the walls without bringing the house down.
Suddenly, an excellent idea came to my mind- Hydraulic Jacks!
I asked the old couple to relocate temporarily and arrived the following day with about 25-30 workers, each of them having a hydraulic jack. These jacks were used in moving houses from one place to another, hence it was the only tool I could think of.
It took us the entire day, but we somehow managed to separate the foundation from the walls and support them temporarily on those jacks. The next day was spent building new walls, and the day after, we finally removed the jacks and filled their gaps.
When the job was completed successfully, the couple thanked us, and I was glad to have achieved such a difficult feat.
